Haron Donation
A collection of maritime photographs taken by James Haron has been donated to the Lincoln County Historical Society. Haron made the decision to donate the photos just prior to his death July 29, 2008.
Haron spent 35 years photographing Newport and Depoe Bay focusing on the ships and maritime activities of the area. He recorded ships entering the harbors alphabetically from the “Aallotar” to the “Zarembo II.” The collection, which includes thousands of photos, came in the form of albums and notebooks.
“These photos will help researchers now and in the future document the vessels and activities of our seaports,” Loretta Harrison, executive director of the Society, said. “Jim’s photos will be featured prominently at the new Pacific Maritime & Heritage Center when it opens on Newport’s Bayfront. We will seek a grant and other financial assistance to scan and catalog the photos in this amazing collection,” she added. Several of Haron’s photos will also be featured on interpretive signs along Newport’s Bayfront board walk.
The photos can be seen at the research library in the Burrows House Museum of the Historical Society.
